Discovering the Impact of Hearing Aids on My Bowen Therapy Practice
As a tutor with Bowen College UK, I realised that my deteriorating hearing could be a significant issue. I needed to hear everyone in the room, not just those close by. Finally, I took the step I had been avoiding and got hearing aids. The difference was astonishing, revealing how much of the world I had been missing. This improvement was not just beneficial for teaching but unexpectedly enhanced my work as a Bowen therapist.
In my first week with hearing aids, I began to notice the sounds I had been missing, which had a profound effect on my practice. One of the key aspects of Bowen Therapy is helping clients shift from a constant Fight or Flight mode, caused by stressful lifestyles, to a Rest and Digest state. This state of deep relaxation allows the body to heal and perform necessary functions.
A subtle but crucial sign that clients are entering this state is the tummy gurgle, signaling that the body feels safe enough to activate the digestive tract. This week, when I heard my first soft tummy gurgle, it brought a huge smile to my face. This sound is essential information that helps plan the session effectively.
Students on the Reboot (Introduction to Bowen) course may not need to understand all the background reasons for this, but by following the moves learned in the course, they too will hear these signs and know that the healing process has begun.

About Jan: Jan Cafearo has been practising Bowen Therapy at her Shropshire clinic since 2006, growing more passionate each year about this gentle treatment that addresses the root causes of ailments. Find out more on her tutor page here.
Why I Love Bowen Therapy: I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1981, working in the NHS, and found immense satisfaction in treating muscular and joint conditions. After a break to raise my young family, I sought a more holistic therapy and discovered the Bowen Technique. The effectiveness of the treatments amazed and delighted me.
My Credentials: I qualified as a Bowen therapist with the European College of Bowen Studies (now CBS) in 2006 and regularly enhance my skills with advanced courses. I’m a member of the Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA) and adhere to the profession’s standards of training and conduct.
Why I Teach Bowen Therapy: I have witnessed Bowen’s power to help people recover from pain and injury, both new and long-standing. I passionately believe Bowen can significantly contribute to the health and wellbeing of the population. As a tutor with Bowen College UK, I offer two-day workshops to teach people how to perform a whole-body Bowen treatment to support their friends, family, and colleagues.
Taking Bowen Therapy into the Future: I look forward to the day when Bowen is a household skill and more widely prescribed as a first-line treatment in the NHS. Everyone deserves to benefit from this natural treatment.
