Joanne Hewitt is a dedicated Bowen practitioner and tutor based in Durham, in the North East of the UK. With over 20 years of experience in the field of soft tissue injuries and rehabilitation, Joanne has transformed her passion for holistic health into a thriving Bowen therapy clinic. Her journey into Bowen therapy began in a rather serendipitous manner, while she was working at a GP practice in Durham.
Reflecting on her initial encounter with Bowen therapy, Joanne shares, “My journey with Bowen started by having a demonstration, and wow, how I felt after that treatment was just incredible. The changes I felt in my cells, how it changed my life, and how I felt in so many ways. When Bowen came into my life, I was more grounded, and I could handle all situations better.” This profound experience sparked her interest in training in Bowen therapy, initially to support her family and later as a full-time career.
From Personal Healing to Professional Passion
Joanne’s transition from working in a GP practice to running her own Bowen therapy clinic was a significant leap. She describes it as “the biggest leap I’ll ever, ever take in my life,” but it was driven by her desire to make a difference in other people’s lives as well as her own. Joanne’s clinic, J Hewitt Bowen Therapy Clinic, has been serving the community since 2004, starting at Claypath Medical Practice and now based at The Garden Room, Brandon.

Her clinic offers a range of services aimed at promoting and maintaining good health, including treatments for pregnancy-related conditions and baby/child conditions. Joanne’s personal experience with Bowen therapy during her pregnancy has given her a unique perspective and expertise in this area. “Throughout my training, post-qualifying, I was pregnant and experienced firsthand the benefits your body can achieve from receiving holistic therapy whilst pregnant. This has led me to specialise in treating people with pregnancy-related conditions,” she explains.
A Passion for Teaching and Community
Joanne’s enthusiasm for Bowen therapy is infectious. Her professionalism, bubbly personality, and dedication have inspired many of her clients to train as therapists themselves. Becoming a Bowen therapy teacher was a natural progression for her, allowing her to share her knowledge and passion with a broader audience. “I think once you experience Bowen, you become a lifelong member of the love of Bowen,” Joanne says.
In her role as a tutor, Joanne is known for her relaxed and approachable teaching style. She makes learning an enjoyable and fun experience, ensuring that her students feel at ease and supported throughout their training. Joanne also enjoys being a guest speaker, giving talks and demonstrations about Bowen therapy to local groups and societies.
Looking Ahead
Joanne’s commitment to Bowen therapy and her drive to help others are evident in everything she does. As she looks to the future, she remains passionate about supporting people through injury, repair, and rehabilitation, helping them achieve a better quality of life. Her constant drive and commitment are due to seeing people’s lives change on so many levels, leading them forward into a more comfortable and fulfilling life.
